2 –Course rationale:
Man is an ethical
being governed by a particular worldview, which is usually religious and almost always ethical in nature. It is when he chooses
to ignore this worldview that man goes astray.
Man’s life
constitutes particular stands, activities and responses that need to be evaluated at every instance, and this is what makes
the ethical perspective in all endeavors essential.
Today, in a world
where competition reigns supreme in our social activities and relations, where the market determines our attitudes and has
a direct bearing on them, a discipline that addresses the ethical dimension of human behavior becomes a “MUST”.
This discipline – irrespective of its nomenclature – has gained currency only to face serious challenges such
as: what if man defies his ethical nature or simply shelves it? Business ethics has an important role to play here by protecting
society from disintegration, choose, and by insuring peace and happiness for the individual.

7-SOME ADVISE/RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR BETTER LEARNING:
1- Read the
course outline carefully and know that learning is much more effective
If one is attuned
to the subject matter. In order tomaster this course students should therefore be aware of the fundamental nature of this
course and its requirements, and plan their study method accordingly.
2- Ethics
and social responsibilities’ has been developed in an attempt to explain a
Particular aspect
of human behavior that can be related and properly understood
Only in the context
of the total Islamic understanding of man. It is therefore necessary to study
the Islamic concept of man and also to obtain an overall view of the different concepts prevail in today’s world.
3-The nature of a course
and its particular requirements have important implications
For your study methods.
You should therefore establish as soon as possible what I
is expected of you in this
course, what type of assignments and examination questions to expect, and what criteria will apply in the assessment of your
work.
[ AGAIN, read the course
contents, discuss with your classmates and the teacher,
spend at least three(03)hours
in a week in reading, and be active in the class-room]
4- In this course
I expect you to KNOW various things related to ethics especially
From an Islamic perspective
and be able to DO certain things with them. Since you have to pass an examination at the middle and the end of this course,
it is
Important that you
understand what is meant by knowing these things and what type of things I wish you to do( or what skills you will be expected
to demonstrate).Actually these two are interrelated: your knowledge of the subject
Will be apparent from
the things you are able to do. By knowing I do not mean
That you should merely
be able to respond the facts found in the reading materials/handouts/websites, or said in the class-room. YOU SHOULD GEAR
YOURSELF FROM THE
START NOT TO LEARN LIKE A PARROT BUT
TO ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND
THE IDEAS, CONCEPTS,AND THEORIES.WHEN YOU DO YOUR ASSIGNMENTS OR ANSWER
EXAMINATION QUESTIONS,
REMEMBER NOT TO SIMPLY SUMMERISE OR REPRODUSE PASSAGES FROM WHATYOU HAVE
READ; CARRY OUT THE
ASSAIGNMENT AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS IN A WAY THAT
WILL SHOW YOU UNDERSTAND OF BOTH THE QUESTION AND THE SUBJECT.
4-Skills
I expect you to develop:
-Accuracy
-Clear,
logical ,and systematic presentation
-Analysis
-Distinguishing
between important and less important information
-Finding
the relationship and the differences between subjects
-Synthesis
-Comparison
-Evaluation
5-Hints
at examination
Although
examination questions can be phrased in many different ways , I actually expect only a few types of answers or a combination
of these types. The following types of questions can be distinguished;
1-Merely
supplying information:
Sometimes a question is asked with the sole purpose of testing your knowledge of certain important
facts. In these cases you simply have to supply the relevant information without explaining, comparing or evaluating it. Such
an answers are required for the following type of question:
--what is/are(e.g”
what are the characteristics of a Muslim?)
--name…(e.g”
name the five pillars of Islam)
2-Defining and
distinguishing
Here I want to see whether you know the precise meaning of concepts and can distinguish them from others.
you are therefore required to give definitions of the concepts ,ideas ,and theories. In some cases the relevant information
can be found in and quoted from any book. But in others you will have to formulate your own on the basis of the information
you have collected/studied. The number of marks allocated will indicate the degree of complexity of the expected answer.
Questions of this
type include:
-----How does …define…?
-----How does…distinguish
between?
-----Define…?
----Distinguish between
3-Explanation
Like every other instructor
I wish to ascertain whether you know and understand an extensive and complicated matter in detail. Since many students are
inactive in the classroom, checking your ability to explain through questions becomes A MUST. Here I want you to write as
if I know less about the subject than you do and you are explaining it to me. In this types of questions you have to demonstrate
practically all / most of the above-mentioned skills. It is a good idea to use your own examples to illustrate/explain your
point.
The number of marks
allocated and presence or absence of qualifications such as:
“briefly”,”
in detail”, and ”using examples” indicate how long the answer should be. This type of questions will usually
start with:
------------Explain
-----------Describe
-----------Discuss
4-Argumentation
or reasoning
This is the most difficult type of answers that will require from you ability to select and process
relevant information, to make deductions and substantiate them, and to work step by step towards a conclusion, in other words,
to reason
In a logical way.[Questions requiring this type of reasoning usually carry phrases such as ”compare” ,”evaluate”
,”why’,” discuss…in terms of…]
BEWARE: We do not have a “Text book”
for this course. You will depend on your own search and research. I’ll –inshaallah-provide you, however, with
handouts and some relevant reading material at the beginning of each lecture.
